Week 10

Dear Parents and Students,

The cooler weather is beginning to set in, but with temperatures still fluctuating, it is good to be prepared for the changing conditions. Students, please make sure you have a light jacket available in class for when it’s cold and blustery outside, and also consider wearing layers, so that you can take one or two off if it suddenly becomes warm again.
The windy conditions didn’t hinder our performance on Wednesday. Thank you to all parents and family who came to support your children. It was great to see so many in attendance, and I’m sure you will agree that the performances were very entertaining. You will find a link to photos from the day at the bottom of this post. If you have photos to share, please feel free to add them to the album.
In the classroom, we have finished another topic in Maths. Topic 5 was all about multiplication, including strategies such as breaking apart, and compatible numbers. We had our topic test on Thursday, and we have now begun Topic 6. This is a short unit dedicated to algebra, with the topic test to take place on Tuesday, 13th November. After the test, we will return to our studies of multiplication when we begin Topic 7.
We read a new story, Tomàs and the Library Lady, in our Literacy Workshop. We then discussed the story in our Reading Circles. This week, we were investigating writer’s craft, and appreciating how words and pictures can combine in books to convey emotions and set an atmosphere.  Next week, we will be completing our second unit in grammar, which has been focused on nouns. Please note that there will be no spelling test next week, and our test for List 8 will take place the following week.
We have begun our next theme in Science, which is all about energy. We have been discussing different types of energy, and next week, will begin investigate sound energy.
Much of our week in Social Studies, was spent preparing for and giving our presentations about Symbols of Patriotism. Thank you to everyone for the hard work. It was certainly an informative few days, and everyone should be proud of your presentations.
It appears that the weather should improve for the latter half of our mid-semester vacation.  I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing four-day break, and I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed on Wednesday.

Dates to remember:
Mon-Tue, Nov 5-6:    Midterm break. School closed.
Mon-Fri, Nov 12-16:  Parent/Teacher Interviews
Tue, Nov 13:               Math test – Topic 6
