Week 28

Dear Parents and Students,

Firstly, let's all thank Grades Pre-K, 1, 3, and 5 for a very informative and enjoyable International Expo! Thanks to all teachers, staff, and parents for making it all possible, a big thank you to Mrs. Johnson for the choreography, and thank you to all friends and family for coming along to show support and enjoy the presentations. We all enjoyed the expo in Grade 4, and it added an extra dimension to our learning and fun during the week.
We began Topic 16 in Maths this week, and spent the best part of the week studying customary units of Measurement. We shifted our attention to metric units on Friday, and we will continue after the break. This topic is a bit longer than most, so the topic test will not take place until the week after we return from Spring Break.
In our Literacy Workshop, we have completed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and we begin our collaborative book review after the break. We will also be watching a television production of the story, and comparing and contrasting this with the book.
In Science, we have completed Part 1 of the Skills Handbook supplement of our Science books, and our Science Fair projects are all well underway.  We will continue with Part 2 of the handbook, and continue regular Science Fair conferences after the break. Students, please make sure that you are able to tend to your projects – if necessary – during the Spring Vacation.
We have begun our explorations of the American Midwest in our Social Studies classes. This week, we began looking at the geography of the region, and for something a little different, we chose to describe a tornado through a short story, picture, or comic strip. After the break, we will learn about the early history of the region, and then later we will study what it is like today.
We finished the week with our monthly assembly for March. This month, the annual Hsinchu Government Outstanding Student Awards were given to one child from each of our elementary school classes. Students are selected by their schools based on several criteria, including character, extra-curricular involvement and academics. Congratulations, Phoebe, on being selected as this year's Outstanding Student in Grade 4! Well done, Phoebe!
I hope you all enjoy the Spring Break, and if you are going away, I wish you all safe travels. I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed, reenergized, and ready to go when we return on Monday, 8th April.
