Week 21

Dear Parents and Students,

Our final week of Semester 1 has been a lot of fun with our Chinese Week activities providing some variety throughout our busy schedule. Thank you to Ms. Tsai, Mrs. Lin, Ms. Debbie, and Ms. Barry for organising and coordinating the activities on Tuesday and Wednesday, and thanks also to all of our specialty teachers for including theme-based activities in our specialty classes. We should also thank Ms. Vicky and Ms. Sutherland for providing some entertaining Performing Arts activities this week. A link to photos of the activities can be found at the end of this post.

We completed another topic in  Maths this week. Topic 12 is all about decimals, and we have been converting fractions to decimals, and then decimals back to fractions, and we have also been comparing decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers on a number line. We will review the topic when we return  from the break, and then our topic test will take place on Tuesday, 12th February.

In our Literacy Workshop, we enjoyed reading Heatwave! and held some engaging discussions during our Reading Circles workshops. Everyone is contributing to these discussions now, and we are all improving our skills in drawing inferences, making connections and arriving at conclusions. We also enjoyed coming up with hyperboles and trying to write our own tall story.

In Science, we have been experimenting with electricity, and learning about currents, circuits, conductors, and insulators. A link to pictures of our investigations is included at the bottom of this post. We will continue our study of electricity after the break.
In Social Studies, we have completed our study of the American Northwest, and spent the final few lessons this week reviewing what we have learned. When we return, we will shift our attention to the Southeast, and we will compare the two regions, along with similar and contrasting areas around the world.

For the second week running, we finished our week by saying goodbye to a classmate. Soushi is leaving Hsinchu during the vacation, and will start school elsewhere for Semester 2.  Good luck Soushi, we will all miss you!

I hope everyone enjoys a restful vacation and safe travels. Happy New Year of the Pig, and I'll see you all back at school on 11th February. 新年快樂!

Week 20

Dear Parents and Students,

We have reached our last full week of the first semester! Next week will only be four days long, as next Friday will be the first day of our Chinese New Year vacation. To celebrate Chinese New Year at school, we have a number of activities, including art, calligraphy, and even maths!

Speaking of Maths, we completed yet another topic this week, and had our Topic 11 test on Thursday. We have already begun topic 12, which shifts our attention to decimals. We will continue with decimals next week.

In our Literacy Workshop, we spent most of our time drafting, revising, and publishing or Instructions. We have also been studying adjectives, including comparatives and superlatives. We will continue with adjectives next week, and we will also have some fun reading our next story, Heatwave!

In Science, we have been reviewing all we have learned about force, notion, speed, and velocity. We finished the week by previewing what we will be studying next week; electricity! As mentioned in the blog last week, students may use the electric kits provided in class, but if you buy your own, you can keep it, and take it home with you. A picture of the kit and a link to further details is included at the bottom of this post.

In Social Studies, we have continued our study of the states of the New England and Middle Atlantic areas in the American Northwest. While investigating the areas, we have also been making comparisons between American cities and cities in Japan and Taiwan, and how advances in technology has made long distance commuting possible.

We finished our week by saying goodbye to Sohyun, who is leaving Taiwan to begin a new exciting chapter of her life. Good luck Sohyun, we will all miss you!

I hope you all enjoy your weekend, and I will see you all Monday. Please remember to wear red on Wednesday, and bring your chopsticks on Thursday!
