Dear Parents and Students,
Our first
full week of 2019 has been a busy one!
We began
Topic 10 of our Maths program, which
reviews what we know about fractions before introducing some new concepts to
Grade 4, such as equivalent fractions and expressing fractions in simplest
form. We will continue our study of fractions next week, with the topic test to
take place on Thursday.
In
our Literacy Workshop, we read The Stranger. The story instigated some very interesting
discussions in our Reading Circles, and we found that a single story can be
interpreted in many ways. We have also begun a new grammar unit focusing on
adjectives, and will continue with this unit next week. Next week, we will also
begin our next writing assignment – Writing Instructions.
In Science, we
have been learning about force and motion. We began a practical assignment
involving paper planes, and we will continue our investigations next week. We
have also had some insightful discussions about force, friction, mass, and
weight, and how they might differ under different conditions, including on the
moon!
In Social
Studies, we have been reading about and discussing the American
Northeast. We now know that the Iroquois and Algonquian people were among the
first to inhabit the region, and we are currently investigating how the region
has changed since European settlement through to today.
We finished
off our week with a special treat on Friday morning, as we were paid a visit by
James Gough, a published author and illustrator. Thank you to Mrs Slabbert for
organising a most informative meeting!
Please
remember that next Wednesday, our Fun Day activities will take place on the
athletics track behind the school (providing we have fair weather!). All
parents and family are welcome to join us at 1pm. I hope to see you then.
